The narrative of the sacrifice of Prophet Ishmael is among the subjects that has captured the attention of religious commentators and artists throughout the history of Abrahamic religions. The multitude of existing paintings centered on this story reflects the interest of artists into a narrative that exists with slight variations in the religious foundations of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. One notable example of visual art depicting the sacrifice of Ishmael is a mural from the 12th century AH located in Shiraz, which belongs to the Zand period and is situated in the Haft-Tanan. This painting is a reinterpretation of a European engraving through the work of Muhammad Zaman and is executed using oil paint on plaster, although the identity of the artist remains unknown. The research aims to identify the structural and content similarities and differences between these two paintings and to uncover the underlying concepts inherent in these distinctions in order to attain an understanding of the intellectual and political foundations of the ruling figure during the Zand era. The main question researchers confronted in pursuit of this objective include: What was the rationale behind choosing the theme of Ishmael's sacrifice for depiction in the Haft-Tanan? Researchers employed documentary and field-based method for data collection and utilized a descriptive-analytical approach for data analysis and has an adaptive approach. This fundamental research falls within the category of qualitative studies, with its statistical population comprising the painting of Ishmael's sacrifice in Haft-Tanan and the version attributed to Muhammad Zaman, selected as a complete sample. The results indicate that belief in the principles of Shia Islam and respect for Sufism, along with an emphasis on the legitimacy of the Zand government's religious authority and political objectives, underlie the choice of Ishmael's sacrifice as a theme in Haft-Tanan. Furthermore, the structure type of the painting displays a form of power and grandeur, asserting the legitimacy of the ruler in relation to the last nominal Safavid king.
